How Tankless Systems Work

In a traditional tank style water heater, a burner continuously fires up to heat the water and maintain the desired temperature, in order to provide hot water all the time.  However, the premise of a tankless water heater is that water is only heated when you need it – there is no large tank of water being heated day and night – just in case!

A tankless system uses a powerful heat exchanger to heat only the water needed.  When you turn on the hot water tap, the water flows through the heat exchanger, warming to the preset temperature, instantly providing you with as much hot water as you want. When you turn the tap off, you stop heating the water.  Since there isn’t a tank, there is no limit to the amount of hot water that can be produced!

Things to Consider

As with all things, there are some pros and cons to tankless water heaters.  When considering whether this is the right hot water system for your family and home, you will want to speak to an expert who can help you assess your needs. You have to consider the flow rate which translates into how much hot water your family will need at any given time.  Although you will never run out of hot water with a tankless system, the hot water produced will be split among all fixtures requesting hot water at one time.  You need to be certain to have the right equipment installed to satisfy the demand for hot water.

Some of the key benefits of a tankless water heater include:

  • Savings of up to 20% off of your water heating bill.
  • Never run out of hot water.
  • Higher efficiency than a traditional tank water heater.
  • Takes up significantly less space than a tank.

A few drawbacks to consider are:

  • The upfront cost of installing a tankless system is up to three times higher than that of a traditional tank.
  • There may be a slight lag time when you run the hot water to get the temperature required, resulting in slight waste of water.

Although the initial cost of installing a tankless system in your home will be higher than that of a tank water heater, the long term benefits are significant. A tankless system generally lasts longer than a tank, plus with the savings in energy costs over the lifetime of the system, a tankless water heater is an investment worth considering!  Call Yost & Campbell Heating, Cooling & Generators to schedule an estimate.
