The Benefits of Ductless Air Conditioning

Spring typically sees a large uptick in the number of air conditioning replacement calls, as old systems wear out and new ones need to be put in before high temperatures kick in. Most homes in the area use central air conditioners, which generate cool air in a single location and blow it through the home with a system of ducts. But not every home can support such a system, especially those built before the advent of air conditioning. Other homes can support central air, but don’t benefit

But not every home can support such a system, especially those built before the advent of air conditioning. Other homes can support central air, but don’t benefit from it as much as they should, owing to architectural particulars or the specific inhabitants.

Luckily, alternative models exist, specifically ductless air conditioning systems which can solve a number of problems that centralized systems can’t. Unlike centralized systems, they use multiple smaller units, installed at different locations throughout the home and each charged with cooling a single section. They cost more to install since more of the home is affected, but they offer a number of benefits in exchange.

  • No ducts. The first benefit is the most obvious. Without having to handle the logistics of a duct system, ductless air conditioners can provide comprehensive cooling power to homes that might not otherwise be able to enjoy central air. They work especially well in larger homes, houses with a lot of family members, and places like nursing homes or boarding houses that need to provide air for a number of people.
  • Tailored air. It may sound like a minor issue, but families who repeatedly squabble over the settings on the thermostat will enjoy the precision that ductless air conditioners offer. Say one family member is cooking in the kitchen and wants the air conditioner turned up to offset the heat from the stove. Another family member is playing video games in the living room. With a centralized system, either the person in the kitchen will boil or the person in the living room will freeze. Ductless systems solve the problem elegantly, allowing both family members to meet their particular needs.
  • Lower bills. By extending the concept of cooling different sections independently of each other, the real benefit of ductless air conditioning becomes clear. Household occupants simply don’t need to run the air in parts of the home that aren’t being used in the day, such as bedrooms or upstairs portions of the home. Yet that won’t preclude the ability to cool those parts of the home that are occupied during the day. As a result, monthly air conditioning bills will be much lower and the system as a whole won’t suffer as much wear and tear, all without losing the comfort that comes with air conditioning. This tends to work best in larger homes, or homes that may struggle to cool the entire household with a centralized system, but any home can benefit from reduced cooling bills.

Homes looking for a new air conditioner or those that can’t support a traditional centralized system here in The Bronx, NY, should call the professionals at Yost & Campbell Heating, Cooling & Generators.
