Don’t Forget to Change the Filter!

It’s that time of year where air conditioners are on full blast and homeowners are looking for every little DIY tip to improve home comfort. It’s not just because temperatures are so high, but there’s an increase in demand for HVAC components, which means prices are higher than they normally would be. Instead of shelling out twice or three times as much money for a replacement system or a repair, it’s always better to have an existing system just perform better due to a few simple tricks.

One of those tricks is replacing the air filter. This component is so important to the functionality of an air conditioner that we find ourselves needing to write a PSA to our customers every year for the sake of their home efficiency.

For everyone out there wanting to learn more, let’s talk about how to change an air conditioner’s air filter. Avoid the need for air conditioning service in Bronx, NY by taking care of it!

The Purpose of the Air Filter

Right off the bat, it’s important to talk about the purpose of an air filter. We’re not talking about a HEPA filter or some other air filtration system that’s installed in a home, we’re specifically talking about the filter that’s placed in the return air duct of an air conditioning system. Its sole purpose is to protect the interior components of the air conditioner from being inundated with dust, debris, and other contaminants.

The filter helps reduce energy inefficiency by ensuring the coils and sensitive internal components remain in peak condition for as long as possible. It also improves air quality indirectly and helps support a long-lasting system lifespan.

Our Guide to Air Filter Changes

An air filter should be changed every 1–3 months. This number changes depending on the conditions in the home. If an air conditioner isn’t being used as often because temperatures are mild, then every three months should do the trick. However, in a summer like this one where record-breaking temperatures are occurring every week, then it should be changed monthly.

Step by Step

Replacing an air filter is a simple process. To begin, we need to locate it.

  1. Look in the return air ducts for the filter. It should be recognizable and easy to remove with just a pair of hands.
  2. Wipe it off with a paper towel, or rinse it depending on the materials of the air filter. The AC’s manual should have specific instructions for cleaning the air filter.
  3. In the case of a disposable filter, throw it away and purchase a new one of the same size and material.
  4. Then, it’s important the filter is placed back in the return air duct the way it was facing when it was removed.

See? It’s as simple as that!
