Is a Ductless System Worth It?

This feels like a transitionary period between conventional heating and cooling systems and ductless mini split systems. Homeowners are being offered these new and incredible ductless units at comparable prices to conventional systems. This means that, for the first time in history, these systems are starting to be competitive in the market.

So, a lot of customers ask the question, “Is it worth the cost?” It’s easier to know what a furnace does than a heat pump, so this question makes sense in the context.

Today, we’d like to take a look at ductless heating and cooling systems. We’ll go over some of their unique advantages, why they’re priced the way they are, and ultimately discuss whether a ductless system in the Bronx, NY is a good move for one of our customers.

Versatility and Convenience

Let’s start with one of the most innovative and cool experiences that people get with ductless systems. Homeowners are used to having heating or cooling systems that are located in the basemen and must be turned on or off at a central thermostat system. This can lead to family fights over the temperature, certain vents being covered up accidentally, and even an uncomfortable home.

With ductless systems, this just doesn’t happen. Each ductless mini split (and your home can have up to four of them per heat pump unit) has its own thermostat with temperature controls. It functions independently, so each family member can set their own happy place on the temperature control system without anyone getting upset.

This set up also enables another core reason to invest in these systems—malfunction control. If one of the mini splits shuts down or malfunctions, the other ones will still continue to function. So, on a chilly or scorching hot day, customers can still enjoy their comfy home even if there’s a part of the unit that needs to be repaired.

Eco-Friendly and Energy Efficient

We can’t cover ductless heat pumps without talking about energy efficiency. It’s one of the primary reasons to invest in one. These systems have some of the highest SEER and HSPF ratings on the market, making them incredibly cost-effective. In an area like New York, where electricity prices are high, this can be a huge boon.

Also, since ductless mini splits systems don’t rely on ductwork to transport cooled or heated air, homeowners tend to feel all of the comfortable air created.

They Just Work

One of the main concerns that homeowners have about heat pumps is that they might not work when temperatures get cold. We understand the concern, since a furnace or a boiler creates heat while a heat pump moves heat. When temperatures outside get extremely cold, there’s usually not that much heat to transfer indoors, meaning the process comes to a standstill, right?

Well, not exactly.

The atmosphere always has heat for us to use. The tricky part is that a heat pump has to work extra hard to pull that heat into a home. This can cause efficiency levels to drop on the coldest days of the year, but the system can still work and achieve the goal of keeping a home comfortable.
