Factors to Consider with a New Air Conditioner

August is usually the time when prudent homeowners in Yonkers, NY take a long hard look at their air conditioners and determine whether a replacement is in order. If your old system is ready to go, you’ll likely want to plan for a replacement in the off-season, when you won’t have need of air conditioning and can plan the operation at leisure. Now is the time to start thinking about key aspects to a new system you might need. A good AC service can give sound advice on which models work best for your home, but there are a few general guidelines for you to start thinking about right now.

Power Output

Air conditioner power levels need to be balanced against the specifics of your home: the square footage, amount of insulation in the walls, and X factors like sunlight exposure and number of stories. If the AC unit is overpowered, it will cool the house too quickly, turning on and off rapidly and wasting tons of energy unnecessarily (a phenomenon known as short-cycling). And as you may have guessed, an underpowered unit will simply run and run and run without every adequately cooling your home. You want a unit that fits the Goldilocks Rule: neither too large nor too small but just right.

SEER Levels

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and it measures how effectively the air conditioner uses its energy. This differs from the power outputs since a smaller system can have a much higher SEER rating than a larger one. (A more effective unit that isn’t powerful enough to cool your home will squander that effectiveness very quickly.) Once you’ve determined the right power output for your home, then you should select the properly-sized unit with the highest SEER rating you can afford.
